Northern croatia - fly in to Pula or Zadar. Hire a car, mooch around and use Air bnb or just stop in Pula or around Zadar for a few days. Lovren and Opatija are gorgeous, laid back, great food and decent value.

In late '80s I drove up & down the Falls road just to see what it was like. Got bollocked when mentioned it in the bar that evening. Getting into the Europa hotel was like checking in to an airport. Horrible place.
